Roger Turner Artist and his Art
Having been born in Great Bridge, in the heart of the industrial West Midlands, England in 1956, most of Roger's formative years were spent in Australia, living in Sydney, Canberra, Wollongong and Newcastle, finally returning to live in England in 1978. Roger is an artist, who has been painting and drawing from an early age. "For me, visiting my artistic ability is like coming home. I get a great sense of satisfaction in creating a unique piece of artwork, particularly when it is appreciated by others. Painting gives me the opportunity to set the stage in colour and light. More often than not I like to tell a story with my art." Roger paints in oils, acrylics, watercolours and pastels. "If I had to choose I think my preferred medium would be oil paint. I work with a wide range of supports from traditional canvas and wooden panels." Roger employs an eclectic mix of styles and techniques in his work but largely works in a semi realistic vein. Sometimes working with a limited palette at others, using a riot of colour. "I like to vary things. In one work I will tone the canvas, produce an accurate under drawing and use many glazes over weeks to produce the finished effect, other times I will start an oil painting with a white canvas and no under drawing, painting directly, working by a series of constant error corrections. Art by errors is an interesting way to work, the paint as it interacts suggests something new to you and takes you in a direction you had not initially thought of. " Many artists will tell you its all about the light. Roger is no different. "There is a painting almost everywhere that I look, particularly when the light is right. I walk around noticing possible compositions, taking in reflections in water, cloud formations or the interaction of people."
